Hello, Friends,
This may be the most
challenging part of what I do.
And, from the looks
of it, I do a bunch of challenging things.
I’m used to selling
tickets, and selling bookings. I’m not as good at it as I would like to be, but
that’s kind of the territory of my “job,” and I do need to eat.
As someone who makes
a living as a one-man show, there’s probably/certainly something in my psyche
that avoids “dependency.”
Yet, much as I
might try, there’s no escaping dependency: I depend on a board of directors, a
manager, a venue, a school, a technician, an audience, and the willing
suspension of disbelief.
Every time I launch
a new show, I depend on the words, the story, the message to carry me through,
to make a statement and for that statement to be both meaningful and important.
And that audience, those reviewers, those hosts and these ticket-buyers... mostly back
me up in the bargain.
But there’s that
gap: that period between thinking up the new show, and fully producing the new
show (writing, memorizing, costuming, propping, photographing, video-ing,
graphic-ing, press-releasing, promoting…) in which the work is all happening,
and the money has not yet begun to pay the bills for all of those “-ings”.
Broadway producers
know how this works, and raise millions upon millions in a scheme which will
theoretically be of profit to their backers.
As a not-for-profit
organization, I don’t have Backers.
I have Angels.
There are people out
there who take the leap of faith alongside me, that believe what comes out on
the other side will repay the common good of this viewer, that audience, this
classroom, that school, this community, that…? They believe in our mission: "to inspire, inform, enlighten, educate and entertain..."
And they invest in
that vision: that THIS understanding of THIS writer or THAT thing will make THAT community
more sensitive, intelligent, conscious, aware, capable… Sometimes, sight
unseen, they invest in what they believe might be returned to the community, a possibility waiting at
the other end.
And I struggle with
seeking that support. Because, I haven’t provided the payoff quite yet, it’s
only barely begun to appear in front of people, and the reviews have only begun
to trickle in. And it’s much easier for me to laugh along with the cynicism, than to be so unfashionable as to bang the drum for a “cause.”
Or, maybe it's because I'm so completely connected to "the thing" that I put my own self-worth at stake every time I suggest that you might want to support "it."
So, my resistance
and procrastination kick in, and I spend a long week, composing and justifying
a fundraiser that makes the case for the value of “this thing,” before
approaching you with the important question.
Which is this:
There’s this thing I
created.
It’s called “Man
Cave, a One-man Sci-fi Climate Change Tragicomedy.”
I think it’s
important.
It came out really good... better than I expected.
I think it can make
a difference for people.
I pretend that
I’m joking when I say, half-sincerely, that it might make a difference for the planet. ("Saving the planet through acts of theatre since 2002.")
I’m embarking on a
long trip and a large campaign to get it in front of bunches of people.
I’m trying to raise
some of the money up front, so that campaign can make a big splash early, and send the
ripples from that splash out as far and wide as they might.
